Explanation[]

So you've been looking at these letter ranks in the stat blocks on the Party Member pages, but you're not really sure what they actually MEAN, aside from a general feeling that S is good and E is bad. Well, search no more--all you could ever desire to know about these mysterious letters is HERE before your very eyes.

These letter ranks reflect how much it costs a character to raise a given stat using bonus points gained by leveling up or PP--the higher the rank, the lower the cost is. Which rank a character has in a stat is determined by the cost per point once the base value of that stat reaches 100. You may have noticed that the cost per stat point periodically increases as you're raising it--this happens in a pattern specific to each letter rank until it reaches the maximum cost when that stat reaches 100. From 100 until the cap at 999, the cost to raise the stat will never increase again. So here's the breakdown:

Letter Rank Base Cost Cost at 100 Cost Increments at: Total cost for 1-100 Cost for 101-999
S 2 7 31, 51, 71, 91, 100 404 6293
A 2 8 21, 41, 51, 61, 81, 91 472 7192
B 1 9 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 91 531 8091
C 2 10 11, 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 91 620 8990
D 4 11 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 81, 91 719 9889
E 4 12 11, 21, 31, 41, 61, 71, 81, 91 788 10788
F 5 13 11, 21, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 867 11687
G 6 14 11, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 970 12572
H 7 15 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91 1060 13485

Growth Rates

This table shows the growth rates for all stats, with Rank H being the lowest growth rank and Rank S being the highest growth rank.

0 11 21 31 41 51 61 71 81 91 100
S 2 3 4 5 6 7
A 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
B 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
C 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
D 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11
E 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12
F 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13
G 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
H 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15

The Base Cost is the starting cost in points to raise the stat by 1. Cost at 100 is the final cost per point that the stat will reach once the base value is 100. Cost increments are the break points when the cost for the next level in that stat goes up by 1, and Total cost for 1-100 is the total number of bonus points or PP it would take to raise a stat with that rank from a (theoretical) value of 1 all the way to 100. The Cost for 101-999 column is just to give you an idea of how much it would cost to finish out maxing the stat from 100.

The G rank was found on a monster. Obviously, it mean that they are not supposed to have high stats very high.

As you can see, an S rank stat costs less than half the points to raise to 100 that an F-rank stat does. Additionally, stats that a character has a high rank in will frequently start out higher, further reducing the number of points it will take to raise it to 100 or max out. The differences between adjacent rankings are still significant, but don't let a B or a C in a stat discourage you from raising it--these ranks are best thought of as giving you an idea on what a character's natural aptitudes are. You'll get more bang for your buck focusing on their strengths, but you needn't feel bound by the ranks.

Thanks for reading, and remember--there's no kill like Overkill!

Note: In Record of Agarest War Zero, the cost at 100 increases by 1.
